Blog #1: My Workplace: Tuesday Oct 11th
My workplace is called ABS-CBN Foundation which is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to raising funds to improve the lives of less fortunate people in the Philippines. ABS-CBN is a large corporation that is world-wide. The workplace is located on 150 Shoreline Dr, Redwood City CA. The corporation looks a medium sized building that is 2 stories high. There is about a few hundred people that work there. There is a diverse race of people that work there, and they are college graduates. Most of them are Filipino, but if they are not college graduates then they are interning there. They either hire people that did not graduate college for internships, but if they have a college diploma then they might get hired. Most of the people there have a 4-year college degree. The others that do not have 4-year degrees are interns. My workplace serves the less fortunate people of the Philippines. The strengths of my workplace are that it's a friendly, and peaceful environment. The weaknesses of my workplace is that you're under pressure of time or in other words under pressure because of a time limit.
Blog #2: My Mentor: Tuesday Oct 18th
My mentor's name is Letty Quizon. She is the boss of the fundraising department in ABS-CBN foundation. A typical day, or week would possibly look like being out of town to go to meeting or do work somewhere else. If not then she would come to work, and just finish counting up the donations. The Philippines just had a typhoon so the company sent mail to a lot of people to see if they donate. After they get mail she, and the department is responsible for counting up the donations. Next off she would plan out fundraisers, and/or events to help fund raise for anything, but in this case the main focus is helping out people in the Philippines because a typhoon just occurred not too long ago. After, around 12-1 is the lunch break. After the lunch break she would just finish up the donations, or plan the events. Maybe she got interested in the field because she wanted to work there. Eventually, after working there for a long time she gets promoted which leads to the job she has now. The education background she needed is probably good with math because they're a lot of numbers involved, and have some experience with Microsoft excel. To get to the job she has now, people would have to work there for a long time just to see if you're trustworthy because her job involves counting money.
Blog #3: My Role: Tuesday Oct 25th
My main responsibility was to count the donations, and making a database on Microsoft excel. My title could be just an assistant, or worker. Other tasks I have done are just preparing mail to be sent to people who are willing to donate. First I get an envelope, then I get a stamp and put on the top left corner. Next I get another stamp that has the person's address. After I get another sticker, and put on the back saying "Typhoon Emergency". After I get the letter about the donations, and repeat the process. That was the only thing I did on my first work day so I did around 500-750 letters. A typical day at work would first get in, check in with advisor, and my mentor will assign me some task. Around 12:00 I have my lunch break which lasts 1hr-1hr 30 minutes. After lunch I would finish the task, or get assigned another task. I would just be completing task until 5:00 P.M. That time is when I'm done for the day.
Blog #4: Project Brainstorm: Tuesday Nov 1st
For my WLE project, I'm thinking about doing taking a video of this big fundraiser coming up with a summary of it. The way I came up with this project was with my mentor. She talked about how there is going to be a big fundraiser event for the typhoon disaster in the Philippines, and she said that no one could these parts. These parts are making a video of the party, take pictures, and make a summary of it. I was then thinking to myself that his could be my project, and I decided to plan it out. I am excited to do this project for the next 3-4 weeks because first I get to try out new things. Next off it might change my mind of who I want to be. If i like doing what I might do for my project then I might major in it. Lastly the fundraiser party sounds something to look forward because it is going to be big since this company is popular especially in the Philippines. What I'll need to accomplish if this becomes my project is to basically do the work my mentor assigns me, and know how to use a camera. That is it because that is all I might be doing for this WLE project,
Blog #5: Progress on my WLE Project, part 1: Tuesday Nov 8th
In my WLE, I just inputted data for the databases which is also part of my project. The databases I did today was Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. A database is somewhat like contacts because it includes name, company, phone number, email, and maybe even a website. My mentor was not here today because she usually has to attend out of town meetings for the whole day. If she is not here I report to my back up mentor and we talked about the fundraiser party and what I'm going to be doing. Right now I accomplished doing databases because I have already completed everything that was assigned to me. The party is around November 26th-27th so I will have to know how to use a camera or camcorder by next week. I emailed my mentor today to see if I need anything else to do in the project but I am still waiting for the response.
Blog #6: Leadership Skills: Tuesday Nov 15th
The leadership skills that I am using the most are Critical Thinking, and Complete Projects Effectively. I am using critical thinking well because for my project I am using critical thinking to analyze information while I research, and also I analyze the information while I learn how to make a website since I did not how Digital Media Arts in 9th grade. I am using completing projects effectively well because I have been completing all the deadlines I have made so far such as completing database, launching the project, and researching about Hepatitis B. I also made goals for myself such as complete this database in 1 hour so I can have more time finishing my primary project. I do not need to improve on Complete Projects Effectively, but i should improve on Critical Thinking by justifying if this website I'm using for research is reliable, and learning how to make a website is reliable and benefit me. These leadership skills help me do my work because it helps me get things done in a proficient matter. I think that my mentor uses Completing Projects Effectively the most because she always complete things done by the deadline, and she makes goals for herself to complete whatever she need sot complete.
Blog #7: What I learned, Reflection: Tuesday Nov 22nd
I learned that I can finish my deadlines on time, do work on excel, and communicate with others. Some challenge I faced was with the my project. Sometimes I did not have internet access for my project so I usually just did my homework, or ask to do something else. I overcame the challenge by bringing in my own laptop so I do not have to worry about accessing a computer. I learned that always bring things you think you might be because you will have to expect the unexpected. Some lessons I learned in this experience is that if you mess around even once you could lose your job, so always act serious in the workplace. My creativity was put into this experience because I was able to make my own website. My WLE placement helped out the community a lot because the website I made can influence people, and could save their lives. I believe that it doesn't matter as much if you are prepared but on how you act in the professional world. Specific skills I learned from this experience is how to use excel better, and how to make a website. If someone were to ask me what I did important I would say that I made a website that can influence people to go to the doctor and check themselves to see if they are ill. What I learned from my WLE will affect the choices I make by choosing a job. I should not choose a job for the money but for what I want.
Blog #8: Professionalism: Tuesday Nov 29th
In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to have a good resume, and a good first impression if I had an interview with them. A good first impression would look like professional language no slang, and good body language, or posture. The most effective way of getting a job is from your peers, or the internet. The most effective way of getting a job is professional language, and if they ask to meet for an interview then act serious and have good body language. As a result in my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means always be serious, communicate productively, and always have good or proper body language.
Blog #9: Life at my WLE: Tuesday Dec 6th
Basically what I did today was work on my project. My mentor was not there that day but my back up mentor was there. She told me that my mentor did not leave work for me. She just told me to work on my project so I worked on my project that day. I improved on being an intern by going to our assigned or designated areas on time. Before we used to hang out for a little in the lobby to get a snack but now we do not do that anymore. Another thing is that we take shorter lunch breaks. Before we did not really have a time to come and we come back in like 1 hour 30 minute- 1 hour 45 minute. Now we come back in 1 hour- 1 hour 30 minute. Also I have improved being an intern by not being as tired. Before I used come in really tired and sleepy and sometimes take a 5 minute break; now I come in fresh and ready to work. Somethings that make my workplace great is that its a friendly, open-minded community and there are a lot of places to eat around there. Something that does not make my workplace great is that it is kind of far from my house.,but aside from that there are no bad things about the company.
Blog #10: The End: Tuesday Dec 13th
My final thoughts about WLE is that do other schools do this or is it just us. If it just us does it help out our college application. Also I wonder if I could do the same WLE for next year when I’m a senior. This experience will affect my WLE next year because I should pick a WLE that I like and I’m good at. For example since I'm good at excel/ Microsoft word, and I know how to make website, I could intern at the same place or I could intern somewhere that involves making database or technology such as IT or for some business.
